Recycling is a cornerstone of the environmental movement. Or, to be precise, reduce, reuse, and recycle are, together, cornerstones.

First step is reduce: Use less. Do you need a new thneed or is your old one just fine? Stop living like consumption is the be-all end-all of life as we know it. Your children will love you as much if you give them four Christmas presents as if you give them seven. (Really!) Reuse and recycle really mean very little to our environment if we keep producing and consuming more and more and more.
Second step: Reuse. That old, tattered t-shirt makes a great rag. Those scratched, unplayable CDs are amusing drink coasters. Whether it’s packaging, clothing, or leftover food, reuse extends the life of so many things, and contributes to your ability to reduce.
Finally, recycle. Turn something old into something new at the end of its usable life cycle. Plastic containers can be turned into park benches. Newspapers become cardboard boxes.
You probably think the Recycle Bin on your Windows Desktop or the Trash on your Mac has absolutely nothing to do with this process. Technically, you’d be right, but why let that stop you?
People’s Recycle Bins are full of all sorts of bizarre cyber-goodies. Documents, email, pictures, and executables are common but are certainly not the whole story. And the clever cyber geek can have buckets and barrels of fun re-purposing that trash for new development joys. Does this contribute to saving the earth and reducing landfill? Nope, not even a little bit. But it’s fun to pretend!
As a matter of fact, the reconfiguring of Web waste isn’t even recycling! It’s more reuse, but it’s definitely not reduce. Still, no animals were killed in the making of this code, so it’s all good.
